Breath Taking Concepts, Viniyoga Australia, Celia Roberts Yoga and Yimi Yoga are
proud to present
Leslie Kaminoff in Brisbane on his 2018 Australia tour.
Re-imagining Alignment: a two-day immersion will include:
DAY 1, Saturday 24 March
Begins with an Introduction to Breath-Centered Yoga, describing the tradition of Krishnamacharya and Desikachar. This historical and anatomical perspective on the subject and definition of alignment provides the foundation for exploration of the uniqueness of human structure leading to Leslie’s admonition that “asanas don’t have alignment – people have alignment.”
Feet are Fundamental:
These principles will then be explored through the teaching of the foundations of the most basic standing poses, with a particular emphasis on the feet as the foundation of postural support. In addition to standing weight bearing, the fundamental dynamics of the foot in walking will also be covered.
Healthy Spines: Range of Motion, Support and Breath
Are forward- and back-bending asanas about moving forward and backwards in space or are they about changing the shape of the spine? What role does the breath play in entering into and supporting us these challenging poses? How we answer these fundamental questions will determine our goals and experiences when we practice. Unfortunately, some of the most common alignment cues do not produce evenly distributed spinal movement, resulting in a perpetuation of chronic tightness in the very areas the poses seek to release.
DAY 2, Sunday 25 March
continues with the practice and theory of clear, simple principles that govern musculoskeletal function. We will explore a full range of asana with respect to the following topics:
Functional principles of alignment
Sequencing for individual needs, preparation and counterposing
The relationship of bandha to support and movement
Why instructions like “tuck your tail,” “lengthen your spine,” “square your hips” may be doing more harm than good, and what kind of language may be substituted.
The use of imagery and non-prescriptive language to empower students
The use of gazing (drishti) and imagery to foster increased neuromuscular integration.
Ample time will be devoted to addressing participants’ individual concerns, questions and interests. When appropriate, Leslie will demonstrate the one-on-one application of these principles with individual students.
